M1 README file - 2/13/90
******************** MPE support
This version of the editor supports Dr. T's MPE (Multi-programming
environment, for long). This allows you to do two things:
1) The MIDI output from this editor may be "patched" into the MIDI input
of an MPE host (like the KCS v3.0) by selecting the appropriate option on
the MPE menu. The alternative is to send MIDI output directly to the
Amiga's serial port as before. If the MPE host is a sequencer, such as KCS,
using this option allows you to record any MIDI messages generated by this
editor into the sequencer.
2) Options on the MPE menu will allow you to switch easily between any
screens which belong to MPE compatible programs, by name. Switching to the
MPE host is accomplished by selecting an option of the form "Back to KCS".
******************** Notes on operation of the M-1 Editor
* A special note about Menus:
Since the right mouse button is used to "play the mouse" in this program,
accessing the intuition menus is a little different from most other
programs. The trick is to move the mouse up to the top of the screen
before pressing the right mouse button. The menus will then operate
normally.
* Drag bar:
The title bar, or "drag bar", at the top of the screen is always active
while this program is running. Please disregard the description of the
drag bar in the manual.
* Hard disk installation:
If you install M1_Editor onto a hard disk, it is a good idea to copy a few
other files into the same drawer as the editor program. The files to
copy are
M1.CFG
M1_PCM.CFG
INITBANK.M1
INITSEQ.M1S
since these files are loaded by the program when it starts up.
In addition, you will probably want to copy the drawer "M1_Files" onto
your hard disk as well, so that the data files will be more accessible.
************ M1/EX Editor version 2.00 8/20/90 **************
M1_Editor has undergone modifications to make the program work with
the EXpanded M1 or M1R. Multisound and Drum Instrument selection are the
only substantial differences. Copy Oscillator was also modified to copy
the extra multi-sound info.
The Pop-up help features for Multisounds and Drum Instruments each have
an extra page. There are now 3 pages of Multisounds - as usual, the right
button or the Help key cycles you through the pages.
If you have a standard M1 (not EX), M1EDITOR will work just fine - but
your standard M1 obviously won't be able to play multisounds 100-189,
(Piano 2 - Saw Wave 2) or drum sounds 45-85 (Pro BD -Perc.WaveH).
The only problem is that this may constantly remind you of all the great
sounds you could have if you had the $$$ to buy the @!#$%^ upgrade!
Two additional data files have been included in the M1_Files drawer.
They are EXFACTORY.M1 and EXFACTORY.M1S. These files contain the factory
presets and demo sequence, respectively, found in a stock M-1R EX. The
file FACTORY.M1 and FACTORY.M1S still contain the factory presets found
in original (non-EX) versions of the M-1.
*********** M1 Editor version 1.2 Bug Fixes & Improvements ***************
1) Bugs in the PCM card handling have been fixed.
Also, the program will now save the current PCM names in a file called
M1_PCM.CFG whenever you use Save System, which will be automatically
loaded when you boot the program without an M1 connected to the computer's
MIDI input. The PCM card names are read anytime you get a bank from the
M1, or when you select a card.
** NOTE - Korg's Drum 1 PCM card apparently has a bug! It will not transmit
its waveform names properly! If you're using the M1 Editor with this
card, you will not be able to see the drum names in the editor. We
wish there is something we could do about this, but we can't. If this
causes a problem for you, contact Korg at (516) 333-9100 and complain
to them about it! The file DRUM_1.CFG contains a list of the sounds
on this card; if you wish to have this list auto-loaded as described
above, just change its name to M1_PCM.CFG (on the original disk or
your backup floppy, but NOT a hard drive).
2) Numerous speed improvements have been made, including the setup time
when booting, and the time to redraw certain windows.
3) If you attempt to save a file with an existing name, the program will
warn you and let you cancel the save if you wish.
4) The program is now more forgiving of accidental use of the <Return> key
when typing numbers, which was especially bothersome in the Program Edit
and Drum Kit screen.
5) You can leave a list entry window by clicking anywhere outside the window,
in addition to the original methods.

Addendum to M1 Editor manual - 3/16/89
Since the M1 Editor manual went to press, we have made one slight change to
the program, which affects the way the Solo/Rechannelize/Mouse channel
works. This change should make the operation of this parameter more
"intuitively obvious", but it no longer matches the description in the
manual.
Essentially, the program keeps track of what mode the M1 is in, and whether
it is currently playing a combination or a program. When a combination is
sent to the M1, the program looks at that combination and, if it is a Multi
combination, sets the Solo channel to the MIDI channel of the first active
timbre. Changing to any of the Combination modes (including Effect Edit
for combinations), or System or Global mode from a Combination mode will
leave the Solo channel at that value. Changing to a Program mode or Drum
Edit mode from a Combination mode will set the Solo channel to the current
M1 Global channel (System Exclusive channel).
While this may be a little tough to comprehend from this explanation
(and honestly, it was no piece of cake to program, either), the net result
is that you shouldn't have to think much about the Solo channel setting
in normal operation. The only time it may become confusing is if you are
using the mouse to play some other instrument than the M1, which is pretty
unlikely.
******************** Other Early fixes
Several bug fixes have been made in this version, and we've also nailed
down the cause of a perplexing problem that is the result of a bug in the
M1.
1) Sequence transmission has been sped up and improved. Previously, songs
that used patterns had problems after they were sent to the M1. This has
been fixed.
2) A bug in Combination Effects Edit mode has been fixed. Previously,
changing any parameter value in a combination effect would reset the
Solo channel to the M1 global channel.
3) If you have had problems using the Drum 1 card in the M1, you're not
alone. It turns out that most versions of the M1 will not recognize drum
card sounds selected via MIDI, with the result that selecting any card
drum in the M1 Editor wouold result in a "No Assign" setting in the M1
itself. This did not work on the version of the M1 we had for test (17
and 19); however, recent tests with M1 version 24 show that the problem
has been fixed. If you wish to use the Drum 1 card with this program, you
must update your M1 to the version 24 software. To check your software
version, hold down the M1's Int and Card buttons while powering up. Version
17 will show the normal boot screen when you do this, while later versions
will also display the version number. Thanks to Chuck Bengtsen, and
Zon Pyles at Synthony Music, for help straightening out this mess.
